The Island is where almost everyone starts ARK, and in ASA it is still one of the best maps to learn on. It is compact, balanced, and every major system - resources, artifacts, bosses, ascension - is here in its most straightforward form. This guide covers the parts that actually shorten your first week: where to spawn, how to level fast, where the resources are, and which caves and bosses to tackle in what order.
Where to Spawn
The Island has twelve spawn regions, and the choice shapes your early game. The southern spawns are the easy, beginner-friendly start with general early creatures, metal to the east and the swamp and redwoods within reach. If you want quiet over convenient, North 2 has very few hostiles and sits next to Hidden Oasis - an iconic build spot with beaver dams for paste and a natural warding valley.
Note: The three obelisks split the map by difficulty in a rough zigzag - Red across the southern jungles (easiest), Green through the central swamps and redwoods, and Blue up in the snow (hardest). Build your first base toward the Red or Green side and leave the snow and volcano for later.
Level Fast With Explorer Notes
The quickest leveling on The Island is Explorer Notes, scattered map-wide and usually near ruins. Each gives a timed XP buff that also applies to the dino you are riding, several high-value 6x notes sit in specific spots, and collecting every note on the map unlocks an extra 10 levels - which raises the Island level cap all the way to 135. Grab them early and pick your first character levels wisely.
Where to Farm Each Resource
| Resource | Where | Note |
| Metal | Rich nodes on mountain peaks | Crystal and Obsidian are usually close by; the volcano has both in bulk |
Cementing Paste | Beaver dams, then Achatina in the swamps | The Immune cave's Meganeura give thousands per run with a ridden Beelzebufo, plus Chitin |
Oil | Northern land nodes and the ocean | Land nodes have decorated edges; the sea has far more |
Silica Pearls | Shallow water on the west snow coast | Hand-pick early, or farm thousands with a tamed Anglerfish |
Organic Polymer | Kairuku penguins on the north snow edge | Wooden club or Pelagornis; babies give more than adults |
Black Pearls | Tusoteuthis, and Alpha Mosa or Tuso | The hardest resource here; the alphas give the big drops |
Honey and Sap | Redwoods hives and sap taps | Tame a Queen Bee for a placeable hive; a Direbear harvests wild hives safely |
The Artifact Caves, Ranked
You need all ten artifacts for the bosses, but they vary wildly in difficulty. Run the easy ones first while you gear up.
- Skylord and Hunter - the easiest and quickest. Mostly spiders and bats; a few grapples get you in and out fast.
- Clever, Pack and Devious - moderate volcano-base and jungle caves. Bring grapples, and fortitude plus ghillie for the hot ones.
Immune - needs a gas mask or three scuba pieces plus ghillie for the poison air. It is the best land spot for Rex saddle blueprints, and you can farm paste with a frog on the way through.
Strong (snow), Brute and Cunning - the hardest. The snow gauntlet wants a tanky cave mount and explosives; the undersea caves need a well-saddled Basilosaurus.
The Three Bosses and Their Element
The Island's endgame is the Broodmother, Megapithecus and Dragon, each summoned with artifacts and apex items. Element rewards scale with difficulty, and it is worth knowing the payout before you commit prep.
Megapithecus - the easiest. Brute-force it with strong late-game creatures on good saddles plus a Yutyrannus buff. Alpha rewards about 220 Element.
Broodmother - best beaten with Megatheriums for their 375% bug-damage buff, or Spinos for the hydration buff. Alpha rewards about 148 Element.
Dragon - the hardest, since its fire breath deals percentage-based damage. Alpha rewards about 440 Element. Bring the current fire-resistant meta rather than raw tanks - the full setup is in the Dragon boss guide.
The Tek Cave and Ascension
Beating the bosses unlocks Tekgrams that stack by difficulty, and the final step is the Tek Cave in the volcano. It needs your boss trophy heads plus apex items, and it ends at the Overseer. Winning ascends your character to Scorched Earth, grants +5 levels per difficulty, and rewards chibis - collectible pets that give a further +5 levels from Alpha wild kills while carried. With every Explorer Note and ascension, The Island alone can take a character to level 135.
