The Dragon is one of the hardest bosses in ARK: Survival Ascended, especially on Small Tribes servers where breeding and raising dinos takes significantly longer. This guide covers the setup, strategy, and what to expect from an Alpha Dragon carry service.
Dragon Boss Overview
The Dragon is summoned at the Red Obelisk terminal on The Island. It comes in three difficulties: Gamma, Beta, and Alpha — each requiring different tribute items. The fight takes place on a floating arena where the Dragon cycles between landing to melee and taking flight to breathe fire.
The Dragon's fire breath is one of the most dangerous mechanics in the game: it deals percentage-based HP damage, meaning no matter how much HP your dino has, the fire will chunk it down fast. This is why the meta doesn't rely on raw tankiness alone.
Tribute Requirements
To summon the Dragon on The Island you'll need a set of artifacts and creature trophies. The exact items vary by difficulty — check the terminal in-game or the ARK wiki for the current list, as these can change between patches. On Small Tribes, farming artifacts from caves and the required trophies is a serious time investment, which is one reason carry services are popular.
Best Dino Setup for Dragon
The go-to strategy for Dragon fights in ASA uses:
- Therizinosaurs (17–19) — The core of the army. Their unique advantage is Veggie Cakes, which restore a flat amount of HP and can counter the fire breath if timed correctly. Aim for high melee and enough HP to survive a breath cycle. Set them to attack your target on aggressive.
- Yutyrannus (1, ridden) — The Yuty rider provides the courage roar, which buffs your entire army's damage output and prevents them from fleeing when the Dragon roars. This is non-negotiable.
- Daeodon (1) — The healing pig on passive heal provides area healing to all nearby dinos. Make sure it has a large food pool so it doesn't run out mid-fight.
Fight Strategy
- Enter the arena and immediately group your Therizis together.
- When the Dragon lands, whistle your Therizis onto it and keep the Yuty courage roar active.
- Toggle the Daeodon healing during heavy damage phases to conserve its food.
- Watch the sky for Pteranodons and Dimorphodons — they'll swarm and can dismount riders.
- If the Dragon takes flight, regroup your dinos and wait for it to land again.
