ARK Survival Ascended PvP runs on a rotating cast of meta dinos, and losing a fight usually means you did not know the counter rather than that you were outplayed. This guide covers how to beat the dinos you actually run into - open world, FOB and base pushes - with the kit and tames that answer each one. The universal advice first: carry a shield, a whip, bolas and extinguisher grenades, and most of what follows gets much easier.
The Counter Table
| Meta dino | Best counter | Notes |
Griffin | Managarmr freeze, or grapple-overweight + fab crossbow | No saddle and low HP on melee builds; shield the dive swipe; never fight it on a Wyvern |
Managarmr | Desmodus (night invis pick, Z the rider off), or force foot PvP | Zs and grapple-overweight beat it; avoid glass-cannon dinos near it |
| Desmodus | Whip or bola (renders it useless) | Bait the pick, then bola it off; a Pyromane buys you a second after being dropped |
| Pyromane | Extinguisher grenade + bola | Hit it or pre-hit yourself; anything that can pick and carry it also works |
| Aureliax (Chinese dragon) | Blade Wasp turrets + torpor (Lightning Wyvern, giga Desmodus) | Its torpor is low so it KOs fast; do not open-world fight it without your own or turrets |
Wyvern | Hard-push with DPS, or Wasp turrets | No saddle, weak turn radius; Griffins and Desmos eat it; gas mask counters the poison whip |
| Stego (soaker) | Thyla bleed, or a Thyla pit; gas + rocket the rider | High Tek turrets on players-only shoot the rider off the back |
| Dreadnoughtus (soaker) | Thyla bleed + Carcha DPS; Tek sword the box off its back | Overweight yourself on its back to freeze it; Tesla turrets cut its damage reduction |
| Thyla (the everything-counter) | Yeet it away; bison milk stops the bleed | Do not try to kill 170k HP; carting one tame-caps the enemy tribe |
| Quetzal box | Blade Wasp turrets, Tesla stun, aggro Wyvern wings, lots of snaps | Tek sword / rocket / gas the box; keep air and ground gens so one snap does not drop it |
| Racer box | Thylas; Mek to break the box; block in with dino gates | Rocket, gas grenade or Tek sword the box once it is stuck inside |
| Mek | Push it with a cheap Gacha and DPS pressure | Meks are expensive - make them defend it instead of pushing |
The Fights That Need More Than a Table
A few dinos are worth extra detail. The Griffin is the most common open-world threat: the biggest damage is its diving swipe, so play low to the ground to deny the swoop, keep a shield up, and if you get picked off an HP Griffin, break the flamethrower juggle with a beer or extinguisher grenade before you grapple-overweight and kill it through the Griffin.
The Managarmr comes in every stat spread, so there is no single read - the reliable plan is to force the rider off with Zs (from a Desmodus) or a grapple-overweight, then finish on the ground. And the soaker meta - Stego and Dreadnoughtus - collapses to bleed: a couple of Thylas beat any soaker, Tesla turrets make your own turrets far more effective against them, and landing on a Dreadnoughtus with a Tek sword to cut the box off is a fast kill too few people use.
Box Dinos and Cheese
Quetzals and Racers are dangerous because of the legal boxes on them, not the dinos themselves. Against both, Blade Wasp turrets do huge damage, and the goal is to make them spend time inside your turrets rather than dropping one snap point and leaving - so keep plenty of snap points and both air and ground generators. Then break the box with a Tek sword, a rocket or gas grenades and kill the rider. Critically, whatever they break, replace it instantly: resnapping a broken structure while they are still pushing is one of the strongest and most overlooked defenses in the game.

FAQ
Common questions
What counters the Griffin in ARK PvP?
A Managarmr freezes and melts it since Griffins have no saddle and melee builds have low HP. If you get dismounted, block its dive swipe with a shield, or grapple-overweight it and rip it with the fabricated crossbow. Do not fight a Griffin on a Wyvern.
How do you counter soakers like the Stego and Dreadnoughtus?
Bleed dinos, above all the Thyla (about 170k HP), shred any soaker - spam them or drop the soaker into a Thyla pit. Add Tesla turrets to cut its damage reduction, and gas grenades or a Tek sword to the box to knock or kill the rider.
How do you counter the Aureliax (Chinese dragon) in PvP?
Play off Blade Wasp turrets, which shred it, and stack torpor with Lightning Wyverns or a giga Desmodus since its torpor is low. In open world, do not take a pick fight with one unless you have your own or turret cover - it is extremely overpowered.
