Blueprints (BPs) are one of the most important aspects of ARK: Survival Ascended PVP. But here's what most guides get wrong: the highest quality tier isn't always the best. Understanding how quality, stats, and crafting cost interact is what separates smart tribes from ones burning resources on gear they can't afford to replace.
Blueprint Quality Tiers
Items in ARK come in quality tiers, from lowest to highest:
- Primitive — Base stats, no bonus
- Ramshackle — Minor stat bonus
- Apprentice — Moderate bonus
- Journeyman — Solid stats, viable for PVP
- Mastercraft — High stats, great for PVP
- Ascendant — Highest possible stats
BPs can be crafted multiple times, unlike regular items which are single-use. This makes high-stat BPs extremely valuable — one good Flak BP can outfit your entire tribe repeatedly.
Why Lower Quality with High Stats Wins
This is the most misunderstood part of ARK blueprints. An Apprentice Flak Chestpiece with 400 armor is significantly better than an Ascendant Flak Chestpiece with 420 armor — even though the Ascendant has higher raw stats. Why? Crafting cost.
The quality tier directly affects how many resources a blueprint requires to craft. An Ascendant BP can cost 5-10x more resources than an Apprentice BP with nearly the same stats. On Small Tribes, where resources are always tight and you're constantly re-gearing after raids, being able to craft 5 sets of armor for the same resource cost as one Ascendant set is a massive advantage.
The same logic applies to saddles. An Apprentice Rex Saddle BP with 100 armor is far more valuable than an Ascendant Rex Saddle BP with 105 armor. The 5 points of extra armor don't justify the 5-10x increase in crafting cost. Smart tribes prioritize cost-efficiency, not just peak stats.
How Crafting Skill Affects BPs
Your character's Crafting Skill stat directly affects the quality of items crafted from blueprints. Higher Crafting Skill means better armor rating, more durability, and more damage — even from the same blueprint. This is why character boosting often includes maxing out the Crafting Skill stat.
Most Valuable Blueprints in ASA
Flak Armor BPs
The most essential PVP armor set. What you want is a full set of Flak BPs with high armor values but at a low quality tier — Apprentice or Journeyman with disproportionately high stats. These are rare and extremely valuable because they give competitive armor at a fraction of the crafting cost. Your tribe can gear up repeatedly without draining resources.
Saddle BPs
High-armor saddles are essential for boss fights and PVP dino combat. Again, the sweet spot is lower quality with high armor — an Apprentice saddle with 100 armor beats an Ascendant with 105 armor every time because of crafting cost. Saddle armor caps at a certain point per saddle type, so check current caps when shopping for BPs.
Weapon BPs
The priority PVP weapon BPs in ASA are:
- Tek Rifle — The dominant PVP weapon in ASA. High damage, good range, and uses Element as ammo.
- Fabricated Sniper Rifle — Essential for long-range picks and defending against raiders.
- Shotgun — The go-to for close-range PVP and base defense.
- Compound Bow — Versatile and effective, especially with different arrow types for different situations.
Where Do BPs Come From?
The main sources of high-quality blueprints in ASA are:
- Supply drops (beacons) — Higher-tier drops (red, purple) have a chance of dropping high-quality BPs
- Deep Sea Loot Crates — Often contain some of the best BPs in the game
- Cave drops — Caves with high difficulty often have good loot tables
- Boss rewards — Some bosses drop valuable BPs as part of their loot pool
- OSDs (Orbital Supply Drops) — Extinction's OSD events are one of the best sources of high-quality BPs, especially from purple and red tier drops
- Astraeos drops — Another strong source for competitive BPs
- Helicoprion item conversion — Converting items through the Helicoprion can yield blueprint versions
Farming these consistently on Small Tribes while managing base defense and breeding is extremely time-consuming.
Buying BPs
At Layeh's Market, we carry BPs across all item categories for Small Tribes Crossplay and Console servers. Every BP comes verified with its actual stats and crafting cost — because we know that a low-quality BP with great stats is worth more than a flashy Ascendant with a ridiculous crafting cost.
