ARK Umbra: Spawn Locations, Drake Claw Taming, Abilities

Best answer

The Umbra is the first creature from the paid Dragontopia DLC. It spawns only at night in small numbers across several maps (not Genesis), is tamed by hooking onto it with the Drake Claw and passing a flying minigame, and is a fast aerial fighter with a barrage breath and the ability to disable Tek on impact. The female Lumina and the Dragontopia map arrive later, so there is no breeding yet.

Dragontopia is a new paid DLC for ARK Survival Ascended, and its first creature - the Umbra - is already in the game ahead of the Dragontopia map, which arrives later. It is a rideable dragon with a genuinely strong PvP kit, tamed through an unusual grapple-and-minigame process. Here is what it does, where to find it, and how to tame one.

#Where to Find the Umbra

The Umbra only appears at night, and only in small numbers, which is why people miss it. It is scattered across several existing maps rather than one home map: Extinction (the desert, the scar and around the sanctuary), the northern regions of Lost Colony, the Scorched Earth scar and desert, assorted spots on Valguero, the tropical regions of The Center, and the Ragnarok redwoods. There are likely more spawns on populated servers than in single-player.

Note: The Umbra does not spawn on Genesis and cannot be used there, which makes its launch timing a little odd. Wild Umbras cap at level 150.

#How to Tame the Umbra

Taming uses a dedicated item, the Drake Claw - a hook-shot crafted for 30 metal at level 56. It fires with three charges (they cost Element Shards) and, aimed with an orange cursor, pulls you up to whatever you click, including the Umbra. Hooking on starts a flying minigame:

  • Repeat the button-prompt sequences exactly - a mistake drops you, potentially to your death.
  • Between prompt rounds you enter a projectile phase: put distance between you and the adds and deal damage without taking any.
  • Each cycle ends with a feed - superior kibble gives by far the best effectiveness (into the high 80s%), with mutton and raw prime meat far lower.

Tip: The Drake Claw can hook onto any creature, but its real purpose is this tame, so it is worth the Element Shards. There is also a saddle (60 metal, level 65) and a cosmetic-only armor set.

#Abilities and the Draco Skill Tree

The Umbra is a fast aerial fighter that outpaces many flyers, and it feeds into a whole new Draco skill tree - you earn dragon skill points from taming, riding, killing and other milestones. With points invested it gains:

  • Mobility - a sprint/glide mode (R) with barrel rolls and dives, running off two stamina bars.
  • Breath attacks - a held charge breath and a barrage, a devastating fury of locked-on shots with melee scaling (over 550 with points invested).
  • Dragon Horn bond - recall it, send it off the map entirely, or have it swoop in and pick you up out of the air.
  • Disable Tek on impact - the ability PvP players will care about most.

Warning: A few abilities are buggy at launch (plasma teleport did not work in testing), and until the female Lumina releases there is no breeding, so you are limited to wild-tamed level-150 Umbras.

FAQ

Common questions

Where does the Umbra spawn in ARK?

In small numbers, at night only, across several existing maps - reported on Extinction (desert, scar, sanctuary), northern Lost Colony, the Scorched Earth scar and desert, Valguero, the tropical Center and the Ragnarok redwoods. It does not spawn on Genesis and cannot be used there.

How do you tame the Umbra?

Craft the Drake Claw (30 metal, level 56), hook onto the Umbra with it - this costs Element Shards - and pass a flying minigame of button prompts and projectile-damage phases, feeding it between rounds. Superior kibble gives the best effectiveness.

Can you breed the Umbra?

Not yet. Every wild Umbra is male; the female Lumina is not in the game at launch, so there is no breeding or imprinting until she arrives with the Dragontopia map.
