ARK Survival Ascended vs ARK Survival Evolved: What Changed?

Best answer

ASA is the active competitive direction for most PVP players because maps, performance, creature availability, and the service economy have moved forward.

On this page5

ASA started life as the Unreal Engine 5 remake of Survival Evolved, but calling it a graphics patch sells it short. The map lineup is different, a handful of mechanics changed, and most of the competitive PvP scene - Small Tribes especially - has already packed up and moved over. Here's what's actually different.

#Graphics & Performance

The most obvious change is the move to Unreal Engine 5. ASA looks dramatically better than ASE - better lighting, textures, water, and environmental effects. The tradeoff is performance: ASA requires significantly more powerful hardware to run smoothly. If you could run ASE on medium settings, expect to run ASA on lower settings with the same hardware.

#Map Availability

Not every ASE map has made it to ASA. Currently available maps:

  • Available: The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, The Center, Ragnarok, Valguero, Astraeos, Lost Colony, Genesis Part 1
  • Not available: Genesis Part 2, Fjordur, Crystal Isles, Lost Island

This means creatures exclusive to missing maps (like Shadowmane from Genesis 2) are not in ASA. The available creature pool is still massive, but some ASE PVP staples are absent.

#Gameplay Differences

While the core gameplay loop is the same (tame, build, fight, boss), ASA has made adjustments:

  • New creatures - ASA has introduced exclusive creatures not found in ASE, like the Pyromane and others
  • Rebalanced mechanics - Some dinos and items have been rebalanced for PVP
  • Quality of life - Various UI and building improvements over ASE
  • Anti-cheat improvements - Updated anti-cheat measures compared to the aging ASE infrastructure

#Where's the PVP Community?

The active PVP community - especially Small Tribes - has largely moved to ASA. ASE official servers are mostly dead or dying. If you're looking for active, competitive PVP, ASA is where the players are. The Discord trading and service community around ASA is thriving, with established marketplaces and a real economy.

#Should You Switch?

If you're still on ASE for PVP: yes, switch. The player base, the competition, and the support are all on ASA now. If you're playing singleplayer or PVE, ASE still works fine, but ASA's visual upgrade makes it the better experience if your hardware can handle it.
