ARK Survival Ascended Tek Cave Guide: How to Ascend

The Tek Cave is the ultimate challenge on The Island in ARK: Survival Ascended. It's not just a boss fight — it's a gauntlet that ends with the Overseer, and completing it grants Ascension, permanently increasing your character's max level. It's also one of the hardest pieces of content in the game, which is why carry services exist for it.

Requirements

Before you can enter the Tek Cave, you must have defeated all three Island bosses at the same difficulty tier you want to ascend at:

  • Gamma Ascension — Requires Gamma trophy heads from Broodmother, Megapithecus, and Dragon
  • Beta Ascension — Requires Beta trophy heads from all three
  • Alpha Ascension — Requires Alpha trophy heads from all three

On top of the trophy heads, you need additional tribute items to activate the Tek Cave entrance at the volcano terminal — artifacts and resources that add to the total cost of the run.

The Gauntlet

The Tek Cave itself is a lava-filled tunnel inside the volcano. Once you enter, there's no going back. The path is filled with high-level wild dinos — Rexes, Carnos, Yutyrannus, and more — all at extremely high levels. The cave is hot, so you take heat damage without proper protection. You fight through waves of enemies while navigating narrow lava-filled passages.

Key tips:

  • Carcharodontosaurus — The best dino for clearing the Tek Cave gauntlet. Its rage mechanic stacks damage as it kills, making it more powerful the further you push through the cave.
  • Pyromanes — Can be used to skip sections of the gauntlet and are ideal for the Overseer's Dragon phase thanks to their fire resistance.
  • Keep your dinos grouped to avoid them falling into lava
  • Ghillie or Tek armor helps with the heat

The Overseer Fight

At the end of the cave, you enter the Overseer's arena. The Overseer shapeshifts between the forms of The Island's three bosses — Broodmother, Megapithecus, and Dragon — using each one's signature attacks. It also spawns defense units and attack drones.

Pyromanes are the top choice for the Overseer thanks to their fire resistance during the Dragon phase. The Carcharodontosaurus that cleared the gauntlet can also be brought into the arena for raw DPS. Be prepared for the Dragon form's fire breath — it still does percentage-based damage, which is why Pyromane resistance is so valuable here.

Ascension Rewards

Completing the Tek Cave grants Ascension, which permanently increases your character's max level:

  • Gamma — +5 levels
  • Beta — +10 levels
  • Alpha — +15 levels

Those extra levels mean more stat points, which directly translates to stronger characters in PVP — more HP, more weight, or higher crafting skill. Ascension also unlocks the Tek Binoculars, which let you see detailed dino stats and zoom in — essential for scouting enemy tames and evaluating wild dinos for taming.

Why Use a Carry?

The Tek Cave requires you to have already beaten all three Island bosses at the corresponding difficulty, then survive the gauntlet, then beat the Overseer. On Small Tribes, this is weeks of preparation compressed into one of the hardest fights in the game. A carry service handles the entire process.
